Galleri Würth is proud to present the largest solo exhibition in Norway to date of the Swiss multidisciplinary artist Dieter Roth. The works displayed in the exhibition are mainly selected from what is considered his most productive period, from the mid 60’s into the mid 70’s, all from the Würth collection.

Dieter Roth’s artistic practice defies definition, but never fails to entertain and surprise its audience. His approach to art is one of playfulness and experimentation. Roth combines the use of traditional and unconventional materials in his artworks, whether organic or man-made, and repeatedly makes use of commonplace objects like toys, garbage and food, together with paint and pencils. Roth finds beauty in deterioration and decay, and incorporates it on a regular basis in his work. The element of chance, combined with the work process in itself, are crucial elements in his artistic practice.

Roth’s background was in printmaking, and his graphic works are the main focus of this exhibition. Being educated as a commercial graphic artist, he would master both the aesthetic and technical foundation and skills required in the graphic medium.

Like few others, Roth has amassed a body of work that makes it impossible to assign him to just any one specific genre. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s Roth sought to explore the possibilities of the book as an artistic medium through numerous book works, and is now considered a pioneer in the development of the modern artist book. Eagerly dismantling any barriers that would keep one artistic expression separated from the other, Roth has been influential in the development of contemporary art, and how to approach it.
