7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015

Theme: Error {Mistake}

The 7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015 is a unique non-commercial cultural project. Many artists and academics in the field of art from universities in USA, Canada, Latin America, Australia, Japan and Europe are taking part in the exhibition.

The International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius has been organised periodically since 1997. Over this period more than 2,000 artists from 93 countries of the world have submitted artist’s books, but an international jury has chosen the best 828 submissions from 64 countries to display at the exhibition. There have been triennial exhibitions not only in Vilnius, but also many times in Leipzig, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Rheine (Germany), Lille (France), Silkeborg (Denmark), Venice (Italy), Seoul (South Korea), Halmstad (Sweden), Salzburg (Austria).

The aim of this year’s Artist’s Book Triennial is to provoke artists to reflect and to encourage them to create works on the curious theme of Error. This is a very challenging topic. We risked ending up with our error and no books. However, the idea caught on and more than 500 artist’s books were submitted for the exhibition. Errors play an important role not just in our personal lives, but in the life of our country as well. Many inventions were made as if in error. Major success can pour on like an avalanche… What appeared to us at first to be an error or a mishap can start to appear, after a certain amount of time has passed, to be a great discovery. Errors can be a source of unplanned joy and discovery when because of reading the map wrong or other navigational problems we end up not where we had planned, but somewhere else, where we might prefer to be, where we might be glad to have arrived and may want to stay. And what about our errors of reasoning, our taboos and stereotypes, the phobias that torment us? Isn’t it time to look at all of that through new eyes, no longer afraid of making errors?

The 7th International Artist’s Book Triennial is a special exhibition: 7 is a magical figure. Therefore it was decided to make an exhibition of the works of artists invited on the basis having already participated in artist’s book triennials more than once plus artists chosen by the members of an international jury. There was huge interest in our Triennial from artists not only in those countries where we are well known, but also Turkey, Mexico, India, Iran, China, Northern Ireland. When choosing the best artist’s books for the seventh exhibition, the jury looked foremost at the idea of the book and its quality. The aim was to showcase the diversity of artist’s books from different countries and of different styles, schools and traditions. As always, most of the books were sole copies or part of a very limited edition, since it is this type of non-commercial artist’s book that we target for these exhibitions.

For the first time in 18 years of organising Artist’s Book Triennial, it was decided to give a prize – consisting of the opportunity to prepare a display of personal artist’s books to be shown in 2018 during the 8th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2018. The prize was awarded to artist and artist’s book creator Hanne Stochholm from Denmark for artist’s books-objects.
